The U18 Sudbury Spartans took home a narrow 28-27 win over the Sault Sabercats during an exhibition game at James Jerome Field on Saturday

The U18 Spartans kicked off their 2023 season with a home-game win against the Sault Sabercats at James Jerome Field on Saturday.

“Things went pretty good,” head coach Alex Vendramin told Sudbury.com after the game. “We have a big rivalry with them ... and a lot of time they get the better of us, so it was nice to get out here and get a win.”

With Saturday’s event an exhibition game, Vendramin said they’ll wipe the slate clean for their next game on Saturday in York.

They’ll next face the Sabercats in a couple weeks.

The game saw a healthy crowd of enthusiastic supporters nearly fill the stands.

“We have a really good backing from the community and support from parents and friends,” he said. “It’s nice to see, they’re nice and loud.”

Their cheering helps spur on the team, he said.

Looking at a season of football action ahead of them, he said they’ll keep up the hard work.

“It’s just getting more crisp and adjusting to what other teams are doing ... and just making sure we’re being more disciplined on the field and off the field.”

The U18 Spartans’ next game is June 3 at York, and their next home game is on June 17 against North Bay. The June 17 game begins at 4 p.m.

The U16 Spartans’ next home game is June 17 against North Bay in a game beginning at 1 p.m.

The Spartans men’s team will kick off their season against the Tri-City Outlaws during a home game on June 3, which begins at 7 p.m.
