Place des Arts capital campaign kick starts with $250K from private donors

Downtown francophone arts facility poised to become a reality

Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury has raised 88 per cent of the $30 million needed to make the downtown Francophone arts facility a reality.

The announcement was made during the launch of Place des Arts' first capital fundraising campaign held at Salute Coffee on March 5.

"Our goal of raising $30 million is ambitious," Place des Arts board chair Stéphane Gauthier said. "With the support we've received so far from all three levels of government, we're confident we will succeed."

A number of private donors and organizations have already contributed to the capital fundraising campaign, titled Share Our Sense of Place, and has collected $250,000 so far.

"This quarter million is very encouraging." Gauthier said. "It kick starts the campaign and it is an invitation to share our sense of place."

Place des Arts aims to provide Northern Ontario's first multidisciplinary arts and culture centre. It will provide a permanent home for eight cultural organizations and house several arts and culture production and presentation facilities, including a contemporary art gallery, a youth studio, an early childhood artistic centre, studios and workshops.

The centre is expected to host 850 events in its first year and generate 50,000 admissions. The centre will be located on the block formed by Elgin Street, Larch Street and Medina Lane.

Sod turning is scheduled for the summer of 2018. The goal is to build the Place des Arts in downtown Sudbury by the year 2020.
