Conservation Sudbury issued a Flood Outlook on Sunday afternoon for all parts of Greater Sudbury watersheds, effective now until until 10 a.m. on May 5.

“Environment Canada’s current forecast includes heavy precipitation that could reach 25-50 mm starting Sunday evening,” the news release said. “The system is expected to dissipate gradually by Tuesday.”

Water levels on all watercourses are close to seasonal average and will rise significantly if we get as much rain as forecast in the next 24 to 36 hours, Conservation Sudbury said. The rain will increase stream levels, which could result in high water conditions and flooding in streams that are already high due to spring melt.

“The developing conditions must be closely monitored by all residents especially those living in known low-lying, hazard areas where overland flooding could become an issue,” the release said.

“Public safety is absolutely the No. 1 priority, especially for children who may be attracted to the edge of creeks or rivers. The cold, fast flowing water must be avoided. Stream banks will be very slippery and unsafe, and must be avoided. Open water areas often found at the edges of ice-covered lakes will continue to widen and these must also be avoided.”

Residents in Greater Sudbury who experience problems due to flooding should call 311. The service operates 24 hours a day.

Conservation Sudbury is in direct contact with Greater Sudbury and other partners to monitor water levels. Updates will be provided as required.
