Updated at 2:38 p.m.: Conistonians rejoice! After nearly 11 hours, power is finally being restored.

Greater Sudbury Utilities tweeted at around 2:30 p.m. that power was being restored.

"We have to re-energize in stages since it's so cold, but within a few minutes, we should all have power back on," the tweet read.

Updated at 1:45 p.m.: The latest update on the outage that has knocked out power to the entire community of Coniston states power is expected to be restored around 2 p.m. today.

Greater Sudbury Utilities said the cause of the outage has been determined to be a downed transmission line in a remote location in the bush. Because the site is completely off-road, power restoration efforts are much more complicated, hence the extended outage.

Updated Jan. 22 at 10:12 a.m. Mayor Brian Bigger tweeted a few minutes ago that two Sudbury Transit buses have been parked in the Coniston Mall parking lot as mobile warming stations. If you or someone you know is in Coniston, particularly the frail and the elderly, you are encouraged to check on them to make sure they are OK.

Due to the power outage in Coniston, there's no power at the town's two schools, École Notre-Dame de la Merci and St. Paul Catholic Elementary School.

However, the schools are still open, and school buses are running as usual, according to a notice sent out by the Sudbury Student Services Consortium.

Greater Sudbury Police are also advising that the traffic lights at the intersection of Second Avenue/Hwy. 17 in Coniston are currently out.

“An officer is en route for traffic control,” a tweet said. “In the meantime, the intersection is to be treated as a four-way stop.”

Also, police are asking people to refrain from phoning 911 regarding the power outage in Coniston. “@HydroOne and @SudburyHydro are aware and crews are en route to fix the issue,” a tweet said.

Greater Sudbury Hydro say the issue is caused by a failure of Hydro One equipment, and restoration is expected around 11 a.m.

Original story:

There's a power outage this morning affecting all of Coniston.

Sudbury Hydro said in a tweet the outage has been caused by a loss of supply stemming from a Hydro One equipment failure. It's estimated power will be restored to the 925 customers by 11 a.m. Power was lost at around 3:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Further to this outage, Hydro One also sent out a notice at 4:46 a.m. saying the situation affects 928 customers in the Sudbury area, including the townships of Dryden, Neelon, Kelly, Rathbun, Scadding, Davis and Awrey.

The cause of the power interruption was unknown as of when the Hydro One notice was sent out. However, Sudbury Hydro said the problem appears to be in the bush between the town site and the transformer station where bucket trucks can't go.
