Powwow: 'It's how their spirit moves them'

Some 100 dancers in traditional regalia converge on Cambrian College

Cambrian College kicked off the start of the powwow season Friday.

About 100 First Nations dancers in traditional regalia took to the dancefloor at the college for annual event. Robert Stonypoint, arena director, oversees the dancefloor activities.

“This powwow is about igniting the fire, the fire within you, to find and live the good life of the Anishnawbe,” he said. Powwows remind us where we come from, and who we are. A dance is very sacred to our culture, it's a part of our life.”

Each and every dancer moves in their own way, he said.

“It's how their spirit moves them,” Stonypoint said. “It's to make our spirits smile, to make them happy, that's why we dance.”
