Proposals are now being accepted for the 2021-22 New Horizons for Seniors program.

The program has provided about $325,000 in funding in support of 19 community projects benefiting local seniors in Nickel Belt and Greater Sudbury, said Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré. The deadline to apply is Dec. 21.

“The New Horizons for Seniors program has provided many enriching opportunities for seniors to keep actively participating in their Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury communities,” said Serré in a news release. “NHSP enables seniors to age with dignity and offers them support they need and deserve. This pandemic has increased the need for safe social connection and to foster a sense of belonging. I encourage all eligible organizations such as Legions, seniors’ clubs, municipalities and more to submit a proposal for this intake period of the NHSP without delay.”

This year there is only one application stream to simplify the process. Eligible community-based

organizations can receive up to $25,000 in grant funding. Applications will need to be completed entirely online to help funds flow to communities more rapidly, said Serré

Organizations will be invited to apply for funding that supports the program’s national priorities:

-Supporting healthy aging, including addressing social isolation, including through supporting seniors’ digital literacy, addressing ageism, mental health, and dementia, and by developing and delivering virtual programming to address these concerns.

-Preventing senior abuse, including helping seniors navigate access to government benefits and providing support to file their taxes, supporting financial empowerment of seniors, and measures to reduce crimes and harm against seniors.

-Celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion, including promoting intergenerational mentoring and engagement, and serving members of the following vulnerable groups: Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of racialized and newcomer groups, members of LGBTQ2+ communities, low-income seniors and veterans.

-Helping seniors to age in place, including providing practical supports to seniors to help them remain in their homes longer.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program supports the following objectives:

-Promoting volunteerism among seniors and other generations;

-Engaging seniors in the community through the mentoring of others;

-Expanding awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse;

-Supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors; and

-Providing capital assistance for new and existing community projects and/or programs for seniors.
