Protesting public-private partnerships

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is holding two events next week to protest the increase in the use of ?public-private partnerships? to build public buildings.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is holding two events next week to protest the increase in the use of ?public-private partnerships? to build public buildings.

The McGuinty government announced earlier this month that Greater Sudbury's one-site hospital would be financed by a private contractor. The contractor will only be paid back after the building is complete.

CUPE local 1623 president Marlene Izzard, who represents support staff at Sudbury Regional, is inviting hospital administration and local MPPs to attend a town hall meeting about the subject at the Steelworkers Hall on Oct. 20 at 7:30 pm.

Private financing of the hospital ?will lead to compromised patient care are more upheaval for hospital workers, much like they have in the United Kingdom where private hospital deals are rampant,? said Izzard, in a press release.

On Oct. 21, CUPE is also holding an open house in a travelling one-room schoolhouse to protest public-private partnerships.

The schoolhouse, which will be parked at Market Square between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm, will educate people about the high costs associated with public-private partnerships. The schoolhouse displays are paid for by CUPE's National Defence Fund.

For more information about the town hall meeting, phone Izzard at 523-6272.
