Pub at Collège Boréal receives $210K facelift

Facility hadn't changed much since campus opened almost 20 years ago

Collège Boréal students now have a beautiful space to relax and have some fun after they're done class. That's because the college's pub has just received a $210,000 facelift.

The facility, located next door to the college's cafeteria, hadn't changed much since the Sudbury campus opened nearly 20 years ago, and was in desperate need of renovations.

“It was an extension of the cafeteria,” said Collège Boréal president Daniel Giroux. “It didn't really have the look of a pub.”

Boréal's student association, l'Association générale des étudiants et étudiantes (AGEE) contributed $180,000 to the project, while Collège Boréal Co-op, which runs the campus cafeteria and bookstore, kicked in $30,000.

The renovated pub, designed by Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture, features a friendly and rustic look, with new wooden flooring and a large stage.

If you're fond of the mural depicting Boréal's northern campuses that's been there for years, don't worry — it's still there.

The pub is now a place where students can relax or study.

“I think managing stress is a key component,” Giroux said. “Just laying back and doing something other than focusing 100 per cent of the time on studies is very important for long-term success.”

AGEE president Émilie Charette said her association decided to do the renovations after listening to students' wishes.

“It means that they have an area to chill, to have fun with their friends, and during the day, to be able to do their homework in a comfortable space,” she said.

“The music club has a better area to be able to play music. We're going to have concerts. There's going to be better food. It's just a space for work and to have fun.”
