Public Health Sudbury & Districts has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at an apartment building at Finlandia Village.
The declaration was announced Friday night.
One staff member at the Finlandiakoti apartment building has tested positive. That staff member remains symptom-free, Public Health reports. Follow-up testing identified two residents, who are also symptom-free.
“Public Health is actively working with the long-term care home to investigate the outbreak and to protect residents and staff. Follow-up testing to date has resulted in two residents who are also symptom-free and are undergoing further laboratory assessment in alignment with provincial guidance.”
Medical officer of health, Dr. Penny Sutcliffe said the newest outbreak is a reminder for everyone to monitor for symptoms.
“The need for everyone to monitor and screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily and to stay home when ill, is critical in limiting the spread of the virus. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, please take it seriously,” Sutcliffe said.
Outbreaks have been declared at four long-term care facilities in the city. An outbreak was declared at Amberwood Suites retirement home on Jan. 5. That outbreak has claimed five lives, as of Jan. 22, in the past week.
The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed seven lives since March. The first two deaths occurred in the spring.
Outbreaks were declared at the Elizabeth Centre and at Extendicare Falconbridge on Jan. 17.
Outbreaks have also been declared at two Sudbury schools, École St-Denis on Jan. 17 and St. David Catholic Elementary on Jan. 19.
