Public Health Sudbury & Districts confirmed Monday there have now been three deaths related to the Amberwood Suites Retirement Home in Greater Sudbury.

That brings the total number of people in the city who have died due to COVID-19 to five.

The two Amberwood residents who died most recently passed away in hospital, said Public Health Sudbury.

“Out of respect during this difficult time, no further details will be provided,” said the health unit.

“Public Health Sudbury & Districts offers sincere condolences to the families, friends, and caregivers affected by these losses and throughout this difficult time.”

Amberwood Suites issued a statement Sunday night about the death of a third resident.

"We are sorry to announce the loss of a third resident to COVID-19. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family. Our residents and staff are very saddened to lose another friend," the statement reads.

"We continue to work with our community health partners to monitor COVID-positive residents and manage the outbreak. These are unprecedented times for our community. Our fight to keep residents comfortable and healthy and to stop the spread of COVID continues to be our priority."

The health unit also announced Monday they have declared new COVID-19 outbreaks at both the Elizabeth Centre and Extendicare Falconbridge.

One staff member at each facility has tested positive for COVID-19.

To date, no residents have tested positive in relation to these outbreaks.

Public Health Sudbury is actively working with the long-term care homes to investigate the outbreaks and to protect residents and staff.

The protection of our most vulnerable populations is of the utmost importance, said the health unit. Everyone is urged to continue following public health measures to protect others and stop the spread of COVID-19.

On Jan. 12, a province-wide state of emergency was declared to protect Ontarians from COVID-19.

A stay-at-home order was also announced and is currently in effect for all Ontarians. Enhanced public health and workplace safety measures are in effect as part of the province-wide shutdown.
