Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) reported one new case of COVID-19 for today, Wednesday June 9. PHSD also reports 25 active cases being watched locally.
Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 15 months ago, there have been 2,110 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,085 of those cases have now been resolved. The details were reported on the PHSD website.
With respect to where the cases might have occurred, PHSD reported that one case occurred in the rural Sudbury District.
As to how the new case might have been caused, PHSD said there was one increase of no known epidemiological link.
PHSD also reports general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected.
Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 688 total cases (no increase).
The next highest group number was 538 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (no increase).
The next highest number was 488 cases for the 19 and under age group (no increase).
Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 299 cases total (no increase).
People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 94 cases (no increase).
There was an increase of one case reported in the "unspecified category". There are now two in that category.
The numbers above may not completely correspond with the daily case count because PHSD does not always report changes on the day they occur.
With respect to COVID-19 testing, 254,247 tests have been performed in the PHSD region as of June 9; an increase of 363 since the last testing report.
As for local vaccinations, PHSD reported a cumulative total of 132,957 vaccines given in the entire PHSD area as of June 9 at 4 p.m.
PHSD is also reporting there are still six cases of "confirmed" variants of the COVID-19 virus.
There are 932 cases that are "screened positive" for variants of concern; an increase on one.
PHSD said additional time is required to genetically-sequence the virus in a positive sample and confirm it as a COVID-19 variant of concern.
PHSD has also reported there are no current outbreaks at any workplaces in the public health jurisdiction. .
Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of June 9 there were five patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital. As reported on the HSN website, this includes three COVID-19 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Some of those patients may have been transferred in from hospitals and other healthcare venues in Southern Ontario. In addition to this there are three admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. None of the patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time.
On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 411 new confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 33 new deaths had occurred. This is the tenth day in a row, since May 31, that Ontario's case count has been below 1,000.
