Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) has reported two new cases of COVID-19 in the local jurisdiction for Aug. 5. The health unit is also reporting there are now seven active cases being monitored.

Also, since the PHSD began tracking COVID-19 cases just over 17 months ago, there have been 2,188 total COVID-19 cases confirmed locally. PHSD also said 2,181 of those cases are now resolved.

There are also still 999 cases that are "confirmed or presumed to be" for variants of concern. No increase there after several days.

The details were outlined on the PHSD website

In terms of where the new cases might have occurred, PHSD said there were two new cases in the Manitoulin district. Two new cases were also reported on the Island on Wednesday.

With respect to the possible causes, PHSD reported one new case related to close contact of a confirmed case, and one instance of no known epidemiological link.

PHSD also reported general demographics each day about the people who are becoming infected. Several increases were reported.

Epidemiological data showed that the majority of local cases are persons in the 20 to 39 age category with 719 total cases (an increase of three).

The next highest group number was 547 cases for the 40 to 59 age group (no increase).

The next highest number was 524 cases for the 19 and under age group (an increase of one).

Seniors in the 60 to 79 age group amounted to 303 cases total (an increase of three).

People aged 80 and over are currently the lowest category with 95 cases (no increase).

There was a decrease of three cases assigned to the "not specified" category, which now has zero cases total.

The numbers above might not correspond to other numbers because the health unit does report fresh numbers every day.

With respect to COVID-19 testing,  270,001 tests have been performed in the PHSD region, an increase of 406 since the last testing results on Wednesday.

As for local vaccinations, PHSD reported a cumulative total of 236,609 vaccines given in the entire PHSD area. There are also 106,377 local residents who are now fully vaccinated.

The health unit webpage has reported there are no current outbreaks declared in any local settings. However, a COVID-19 outbreak was declared on Wednesday at the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island, by members of the community’s pandemic crisis team. That outbreak is still regarded as active by local officials on the Island

Also, at Sudbury's Health Sciences North, as of Aug. 5 there are two patients with confirmed COVID-19 at the hospital, said the HSN website. Both patients are in the Intensive Care Unit. In addition to this there are nine admitted patients "being tested" for COVID-19. HSN said none of the patients being tested has been admitted to the ICU at this time.

On the provincial COVID-19 register today, the Ontario government daily website reported 213 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases across the province. Also today, the province reported 14 new deaths** had occurred in the past 24 hours. **NOTE: Due to a data clean-up, 12 of the deaths being reported today by Ontario Public Health occurred between February 2021 and May 2021.
