The Cambrian Alumni Association has nominated Northern Life publisher and Cambrian College graduate Abbas Homayed for the 2003 Premier?s Awards.

ABBAS HOMAYED
This is a province-wide competition held annually to honour the important social and economic contributions made by Ontario Community College alumnae.

Homayed, a 1988 graduate from the Electronics Engineering Program, is one of six graduates to be nominated by the Alumni Association.

?It wasn?t easy to select just six outstanding grads from the 27,000 Cambrian alumnae who have distinguished themselves in their careers,? noted co-ordinator of college advancement and alumni development, Brian Vendramin.

?But in the end we are extremely pleased with this year?s candidates.?

The other five nominees, their course of study, year of graduation and nomination category:
- Curtis Belcher, Business Administration, 1993, business.
- Tony Jurgilas, Graphic Design, 1983, creative arts and design;
- Nicole LeClair, Welder Fitter 1999, recent graduate;
- Suzanne Murphy, Bilingual Child Care Worker 1981, community Services,
- Kathy Wells-McNeil, Registered Nurse, 1995, health sciences.

In all, the province?s 24 Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology nominated 87 Ontario Community College graduates. Only one winner will be selected in each category.

?As usual, we suspect the field will be extremely competitive for our grads,? commented Vendramin, ?but last year we were honoured to have a winner, Sudbury lawyer Martin Bayer, a 1984 Business Administration grad who finished first in the business category.?

Each of the nominees will be invited to a gala award dinner with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty in Kingston in February, where this year?s overall winners will be announced.

The six Cambrian candidates will also be honoured at a special dinner in November, at the College?s Fontaine Bleue Dining Room hosted by Cambrian College pesident Sylvia Barnard and the Cambrian Alumni Association.
