Rabid foxes still problem in area

The concern about rabies is not over yet. Since late last month at least eight cases have been reported in the Sudbury District. Incidents include a dead fox found in a Wahnapitae barn.

Incidents include a dead fox found in a Wahnapitae barn. The wild animal may have been in contact with a herd of cattle and several barn cats.

There was also a case involving a fox threatening two dogs on McCharles Lake Road in Walden. The owner of the dogs shot that fox.

A fox also viciously attacked a dog in the Black Lake Road area of Walden. The pet was not vaccinated and had to be destroyed. Another dog was more fortunate after killing a fox on Clemintine Street in Sudbury. That pet had been vaccinated.

A fox was killed by a homeowner?s dog in Whitefish. The dog?s vaccination history is uncertain and the pet is under quarantine.

Two dogs brought home a dead fox to a residence in Whitefish. The pets were involved in a previous rabies incident and just had their quarantine period expire. They are now back in quarantine.

A horse was bitten before killing a fox in Hanmer. The vaccination status of the horse is unknown. Meanwhile, a dog in Wahnapitae was destroyed after coming in contact with a confirmed positive fox.

The veterinary association is reminding the public vaccination of pets and livestock is the most reliable method of preventing the loss of a loved and valuable animal to rabies.
