The concern about rabies is not over yet. Since late last month at least eight cases have been reported in the Sudbury District.
Incidents include a dead fox found in a Wahnapitae barn. The wild animal may have been in contact with a herd of cattle and several barn cats.
There was also a case involving a fox threatening two dogs on McCharles Lake Road in Walden. The owner of the dogs shot that fox.
A fox also viciously attacked a dog in the Black Lake Road area of Walden. The pet was not vaccinated and had to be destroyed. Another dog was more fortunate after killing a fox on Clemintine Street in Sudbury. That pet had been vaccinated.
A fox was killed by a homeowner?s dog in Whitefish. The dog?s vaccination history is uncertain and the pet is under quarantine.
Two dogs brought home a dead fox to a residence in Whitefish. The pets were involved in a previous rabies incident and just had their quarantine period expire. They are now back in quarantine.
A horse was bitten before killing a fox in Hanmer. The vaccination status of the horse is unknown. Meanwhile, a dog in Wahnapitae was destroyed after coming in contact with a confirmed positive fox.
The veterinary association is reminding the public vaccination of pets and livestock is the most reliable method of preventing the loss of a loved and valuable animal to rabies.
