92.7 Rock morning show hosts Chris Byrne and Mellaney Dahl are on a mission to have the Main Public Library on MacKenzie Street renamed for Jeopardy host Alex Trebek.

Trebek, a Sudbury native, announced Wednesday he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

“Now normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I'm going to fight this and I'm going to keep working and with the love and support of my family and friends and with the help of your prayers,” Trebek said in a video.

“Also, I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”

Byrne has started a petition on Change.org to name the Main Public Library in Trebek's honour.

“What better way to honour a Canadian icon?” said the petition, which had already been signed by 506 people as of Friday morning.

The local radio show host said he started the petition because “Alex Trebek asked for some help and wanted everyone to be thinking of him in this fight that he's got.”

The petition is aimed at the members of Greater Sudbury city council to get them to consider the idea.

Byrne said he realized that while local streets and arenas have been named for people in Greater Sudbury, the same doesn't hold true for most libraries in town.

“It just made perfect sense that if you're going to have someone as intellectual as Alex Trebek — why not name a library after him?” Byrne said.

Although discussions are underway to replace the Main Public Library building, Byrne said he doesn't seen why its new name couldn't move with it.
