The Rainbow District School Board is now accepting applications from members of the public to replace one of its trustees for the term ending December 2018.

The board voted Dec. 13 to appoint a candidate to replace outgoing trustee Tyler Campbell, rather than have a costly byelection.

Campbell, a manager with the City of Greater Sudbury, announced his resignation as trustee late last year after he faced allegations of a conflict of interest around a proposed soccer dome or artificial turf on school board property.

Trustees had 90 days to replace Campbell as of Jan. 9, the effective date of his resignation.

Some have suggested that the candidate who came second to Campbell in the last trustee election should have been appointed by the board. However, the board instead decided to ask for applications from the community.

Anita Gibson, the runner-up in the aforementioned election, has been under a trespass order by the board since 2012. Board chair Doreen Dewar said Gibson is welcome to apply for the position along with other members of the community.

The deadline for applications is at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13. A candidate will be appointed at the regular board meeting on Tuesday, March 21.

Both of these dates, by the way, are after the Feb. 7 meeting where the board is expected to make a decision on school closures through the accommodation reviews it's current engaged in.

According to Section 219 of the Education Act, a person can be elected to a school board if they're “qualified to vote for members of that district school board or that school authority and is resident in its area of jurisdiction.”

Applicants are asked to provide their complete contact information, a recent criminal record check, proof of qualifications in accordance with Section 219 of the Education Act, two letters of support and a resume.

They should also provide a cover letter highlighting their interest in public education, commitment to student achievement and well-being, understanding of the role of trustee, willingness to comply with the policies and administrative procedures of the Rainbow District School Board as well as its governance bylaws, policies and procedures for trustees and ability to commit the time required to fulfill the role of trustee.

These documents should be sent to [email protected]. Learn more about the application process on the Rainbow board's website.
