Rainbow District School Board is challenging staff and students to be agents of change in support of Pollution Prevention Week Sept. 16-20.
Pollution Prevention Week provides the ideal opportunity for Rainbow schools to emphasize and highlight sustainability activities and achievements, expand pollution prevention efforts and commit to new actions.
Throughout the week, students will be tasked to avoid plastic and single-use materials in lunches, classroom activities and lesson plans.
Students will also be invited to research various causes of pollution, and brainstorm ways to help prevent it.
This Go Green initiative is part of the Environmental Committee’s ongoing efforts to build an understanding about the global plastic pollution crisis.
“Pollution is one of the major defining environmental challenges of our time,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg, in a press release.
“Our participation in Pollution Prevention Week is another means of encouraging school communities to continue to adopt sustainable practices, both inside and outside of the classroom.”
There are many ways to minimize waste and prevent pollution including reusing supplies, toys and clothes; biking, walking or carpooling to work or school; and turning off screens, lights and taps when not in use.
Rainbow District School Board’s Environmental Committee issues monthly challenges to staff and students throughout the school year.
