A rainfall warning is in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity, according to a notice issued by Environment Canada at around 5 a.m. Monday.

Rain, at times heavy, is expected. Total rainfall amounts of 40 to 60 mm are expected by Tuesday morning.

Rain currently over the region will become lighter through the morning but will become heavy late this afternoon and tonight. The rain will gradually taper to a few showers Tuesday morning.

In addition to the heavy rain, winds gusting to near 80 km/h are possible overnight into Tuesday morning for areas from Sault Ste. Marie east towards Killarney and for Manitoulin Island.

This rain is associated with a developing low pressure system that will track towards Sault Ste. Marie by Tuesday morning.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Rainfall warnings are issued when significant rainfall is expected.
