With as much as 50 mm of rain in the forecast, Conservation Sudbury is urging the public, especially those in low-lying, flood-prone areas, to keep an eye on the conditions in their area.

The conservation group is maintaining a water safety statement for all parts of the Greater Sudbury watersheds from noon on Oct. 23 until 10 a.m. on Oct. 27.

Environment Canada has forecast 40-50 mm of rain to fall over the next 36 hours or so. However, given the risk of thunderstorms, additional precipitation beyond 40-50 mm in isolated locations is possible. https://www.sudbury.com/local-news/rainfall-warning-expect-heavy-rain-for-late-afternoon-and-tonight-746417

At the moment, stream flow and levels are within the seasonal ranges in all watersheds, the group said in a news release today. If the forecast amount of rain is received, water levels will rise quickly and the runoff will result in faster-flowing waters.

"The developing conditions must be closely monitored by all residents especially those living in known low-lying, hazard areas where overland flooding could become an issue," Conservation Sudbury stated.

If you're a Greater Sudbury resident and you experience problems due to overland runoff or flooding, call 3-1-1 24 hours a day.

If there's a creek, stream, brook or river in your area, be aware children may be attracted to the water's edge. With fast-flowing water conditions, stream banks will be very slippery and unsafe, and must be avoided, Conservation Sudbury warns.

Conservation Sudbury and the city continue monitoring water levels. Updates will be provided as required.
