Ready, set, roll: Soap Box Derby takes off June 17

Event part of Impact 6/21 impaired driving campaign, aimed at promoting road safety

The Greater Sudbury Impact 6/21 Soap Box Derby is gearing up for another year of races this Father's Day weekend.

The event takes place June 17, just steps away from where three teens tragically lost their lives after they were struck and killed in Hanmer by an impaired driver on Father's Day in 2009.

"That hill has been forever covered in tears and we saw the Soap Box Derby as a way to bring some laughter back to an area that was filled with so much sadness," Human League Association of Sudbury volunteer Leanne Lavoie said today.

"Partnering with the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the City of Greater Sudbury is an excellent way to promote the importance of road safety in a fun setting."

Racers ages 6 to 17 will compete against one another during the all-day event that will take place on RR80 in Hanmer. The road will be closed between Glenn Street and Centennial Drive with multiple detours for motorists.

There will be two races: a morning race from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and an afternoon race from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration is $20 for kids with their own car or $30 for kids needing to borrow a car and helmet. All proceeds go to the Breakfast Club for Kids program in Sudbury.

Race spots are limited, register online at facebook.com/greatersudburyderby or phone 705-929-9858.
