Region’s 12th COVID-19-related death linked to Pioneer Manor outbreak

There have been eight cases reported so far at city-run long-term care home

Public Health Sudbury & Districts has confirmed the region’s 12th death linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The death, announced Feb. 13 just after 3 p.m., is linked to the outbreak at Pioneer Manor.

The outbreak at the city-run long-term care home was announced Feb. 7. So far, the outbreak has included five cases among residents and three among staff.

“Public Health Sudbury & Districts offers sincere condolences to the family, friends, and caregivers affected by this loss and throughout this difficult time. Out of respect, no further details will be provided.” 

The death will be reported in Public Health’s daily update of COVID-19 case data at 4 p.m. today.

As of Friday afternoon, Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) was monitoring 35 cases. Since the pandemic was declared almost a year ago, there have been 559 total COVID-19 cases reported to the Sudbury health unit, with 524 of those cases being resolved locally. 

Provincially, Public Health Ontario today reported 1,300 new cases of COVID-19, an increase of more than 200 cases over the previous day. The majority are in the Greater Toronto Area: 433 in Toronto, 253 in Peel and 116 in York Region.

Today's report also includes 19 new deaths.

The Feb. 12 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,434 new recoveries
  • 786 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 763 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 287 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 295) and 203 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 204 yesterday).
  • The province reported 58,760 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.2 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 32,143 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, more than 10.2 million tests have been completed.
