Retired teachers wanted

The Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO) met in Greater Sudbury to discuss income tax splitting, health insurance premiums and low membership numbers.

The Retired Teachers of Ontario (RTO) met in Greater Sudbury to discuss income tax splitting, health insurance premiums and low membership numbers.

During the meeting, a petition was passed around the room, filled with about 130 retired teachers from public and catholic school boards, encouraging the retirees to add their signatures to demanding an income splitting policy for seniors.

The income splitting policy would be ideal for retirees on a fixed income dealing with financial concerns such as the rising costs of health care and accommodations, said Helen Biales, provincial president for the RTO.

Guill Archambault, president of the Greater Sudbury district of the RTO, said membership is a regional concern he would like to resolve.
