The Inco retiree creates unique souvenirs made from ore that he gives away to people he meets on his travels. He glues ore on pieces of sheet metal and attaches a city logo lapel pin.

He says he loves Greater Sudbury and he enjoys promoting the community.

Baccialgia worked for Inco for 39 years and grew up in the West End. He has spent many years as a volunteer serving on numerous committees and boards including the Caruso Club.

Last fall he had a chance meeting with a group of tourists in the parking lot of a mall at the Four Corners.

The tourists were students from the Department of Geography, Geology and the Environment at Slippery Rock University in western Pennsylvania.

Baccialgia shared with them his knowledge about the geography and geology of Sudbury Basin.

He always carries his souvenirs with him in his car, so he gave some to the students.

A souvenir of Sudbury is now proudly displayed in the geology department display case at SlipperyRock, says professor Michael J. Zieg.

Zieg did his thesis in Sudbury a couple of years ago. He took his students on a tour of the area this fall. One of the highlights of the trip was their meeting with Bacciaglia.

His thank-you letter to Bacciaglia says, ?You had a big impact on our students who appreciated hearing your first-hand experience of working in Sudbury. You provided a different perspective?.your story helped them to appreciate the link between the geology that we saw and the lives of people.

?Everyone enjoyed your gift of real Sudbury ore. What better way to drive home the interplay between rocks and human society than with their very own piece of ore?I am sure the students will be talking about their experience for many years to come and the rock will provide a great spark for remembering that weekend.?

Bacciaglia was rewarded for his efforts with a SlipperyRock baseball cap.
