Mayoral candidate Lynne Reynolds says she'll set aside $1 million a year from the city's budget for a training and scholarship fund for youth.
“Our annual budget is nearly $500 million and I will ask our new council to join with me to send a strong message of support to our youth who are looking for assistance in their post-secondary education and job skills training programs,” said Reynolds, in a release.
“This $1 million investment represents less than one quarter of one percent of our total annual budget.”
The fund will assist 200 young adults with up to a $5,000 education grant if they do their post-secondary training in Greater Sudbury. Scholarship candidates will be selected based on their high school graduating grades.
Reynolds is also promising to tackle the problem of inequitable long-distance telephone charges that affect citizens of outlying communities.
“There must be a concerted effort to eliminate intra-city long-distance telephone charges,” she said. “It is ridiculous that our citizens must pay upwards of 20 cents per minute to call from Walden to Hanmer, Capreol to Whitefish and other communities.”
Reynolds has launched an online petition about the issue on her website, www.lynnereynolds.ca. She can also be reached at 524-0070 or [email protected].
