Rock 'N Glow Bonspiel in the house

While many in Northern Ontario are locked into the dead of winter, the Human League Association is just getting warmed up for its annual Rock ‘N Glow Bonspiel.

The curling event takes place on Feb. 9 at the Sudbury Curling Club. A total of 24 teams will get their glow on as they compete for such titles as ‘glowiest, winningest and loudest’ teams, according to a news release. The event is more about raising awareness for the Human League’s program than it is about winning — and with every player who participates, every company who supports, and every organization who sponsors, local children win big, said Leanne Tucker, executive director of the Human League.

“Partnering with the Sudbury Curling Club was an easy decision”, she said. “We already have a few kids that enjoy curling through our PLAY program, and hope that events like this one will encourage more youth to come out and try a sport they might not have considered in the past. It’s certainly a lot of fun — and much more challenging than you think.”

Registration is now open for the Bonspiel, and individuals or teams can register by calling the Sudbury Curling Club at 705-673-5601. Cost is $60 per person, and includes equipment, meal, entertainment and prizes.

In 2012, the Human League Association provided financial support to more than 400 local children through the PLAY program. The program provides up to $300 in financial assistance for qualified families (per child) to assist with the costs of registration and equipment. The Association also raises funds for the Breakfast Club for Kids program, and is currently preparing to launch a new program for at-risk youth with FASD.
