Science North unveils the science behind Guinness World Record holders

New exhibit will be on display until September

Dr. Dave MacLean held his breath for three minutes and 24 seconds Friday afternoon at Science North, and while it came nowhere near the Guinness world record of 24.345 minutes, it did impress the dozens who gathered for the launch of Science North's new exhibition.

The Science of Guinness World Records reveals the secrets — and science — behind some of the most astonishing Guinness World Records ever set. Developed by Science North in partnership with Ripley Entertainment Inc. and Guinness World Records, the exhibit challenges visitors to reconsider what's possible to achieve with the right inspiration, motivation and practice.

“Our 13th travelling exhibit was inspired by the success of The Science of Ripley's Believe It or Not!, one of Science North's blockbuster exhibits, which is still touring North America,” said Dr. Stephen Kosar, chair of the Science North board.

The latest exhibit will premier March 7 and will be on display at Science North until Sept. 7 before embarking on a five-year tour of science centres and museums across North America.

Science North will have a full schedule of events, special guests and weekly record-breaking challenges as part of the exhibit.

“We've seen first-hand that people all over the world love to be challenged, to be wowed, and to expand their ideas about what human beings can achieve,” said Julie Moskalyk, science director, Science North.

“Guinness World Records has always been a natural fit with the science community,  — not only does it constitute many chapters in the annual GWR book, but is also used constantly by record-breakers to assist their officially amazing achievements,” said Paul O'Neill, VP Creative, Guinness World Records. “The exhibit has been designed and curated to explore amazing science records demonstrated through pictures, film and interactive record-breaking exhibits.”
