Science North's new object theatre will take your breath away

Ready, Set, Move! encourages physical activity in a fun way

Science North's newest multimedia object theatre is helping to remove the fog of inactivity in children.

Only one in 10 children get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day, according to the Sudbury and District Health Unit. Adults aren't much better, either. One in five adults gets the recommended 150 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week.

That's why the science centre opened Ready, Set, Move, which encourages visitors of all ages to rediscover the joy of movement and to get active.

The new object theatre is an international co-production between Science North, Canada’s second largest science centre, and Denmark’s leading science centre, Experimentarium. It took three years to develop the content, animation and interactivity of the theater.

The experience takes visitors on a journey into the world of healthy living using movement-sensing technology that allows visitors to actively participate in the animated story. Ready, Set, Move! places visitors into the story of Anna and her quest to save her family from an ominous, dark fog. Visitors jump, dodge, twist and actively play throughout the show as a way to help Anna successfully complete her quest.

“Ready, Set, Move! is an exciting and vibrant new addition to our science centre and explains a very important topic in a fun and engaging way,” said Science North CEO Guy Labine. “Thanks to the collaboration with our friends at Experimentarium, the theatre has the potential to change the way we think about our overall health and activity levels in our everyday lives.”

“We are thrilled to have worked collaboratively with Experimentarium to develop this very unique and engaging visitor experience,” said Science North science director Jennifer Pink.

“When developing the new Experimentarium in Copenhagen, we set out to create unique and exciting interactive experiences that would take our guests’ breath away,” said Experimentarium CEO Kim Gladstone Herlev. “Through creative collaboration with Science North, we have certainly achieved this with Ready, Set, Move! – it is guaranteed to make you feel breathless in the most entertaining way possible.”

Ready, Set, Move! will be showcased as a main exhibit at Experimentarium when the centre reopens in Copenhagen in January 2017 after extensive renovations there.

Admission to Ready, Set, Move! is included with Science Centre admission and is free for Science North members.
