A second confirmed case of COVID-19 has been reported in the preschool room at the daycare at Algonquin Road Public School, according to a letter posted to the Rainbow District School Board’s website Dec. 4.

The second confirmed case is among the cohort that is currently self-isolating due to the first confirmed case at the daycare on Tuesday.

An outbreak has now been declared at the daycare, the Rainbow Board stated in its post.

The letter from Rainbow board director of education Norm Blaseg explains that as per provincial guidelines, an outbreak is defined as two or more laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in children, staff/providers or other visitors with an epidemiological link within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the child care setting

There is no evidence of widespread transmission at the daycare or the school at this time, the letter said.

The daycare remains open, and before and after school programs at Algonquin also continue to operate. Algonquin Road Public School is also open.

The board said that as a precaution, enhanced cleaning and disinfecting will take place before classes begin this morning.

According to the board’s website, the daycare at Algonquin school is operated by Jubilee Heritage Family Resources.
