Eight people were evacuated and four are left homeless after a fire caused $200,000 in damage to a single family home on Secord Road, said Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

Major damage was done to the roof and exterior, and major smoke damage was sustained throughout the entire home. Twenty-five firefighters from five stations were called to the two-storey house fire at 6:37 p.m. on Dec. 4. No one was injured.

Greater Sudbury Fires Service public safety officer Mitch Theriault said the most likely cause of the fire is electrical; however, the extent of the damage is so extensive, it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause.

As such, the fire department encourages residents to avoid overloading a circuit with “octopus outlets.” If additional outlets are needed, have them installed by a licenced electrician. Check cords for damage such as fraying or nicks. Extension cords should only be used as a temporary connection.
