In a statement issued today, Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré said he was “elated” that city council has committed to four-laning MR35.
During the July 11 council meeting, Ward 3 Coun. Gerry Montpellier and Ward 4 Coun. Evelyn Dutrisac introduced a motion to commit council to starting the project in 2018, even if applications for provincial and federal money aren’t successful.
Only Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh voted against the motion, citing concerns about debt-financing the project over 25 years.
Those supporting the widening said not only was four-laning promised to residents in the area as part of amalgamation, but also speeding, heavy truck use and increasing traffic counts justify the expense.
Serré, who noted he was behind the project prior to his election, applauded the move.
“This project has been a very long time coming and I can honestly say I am proud to hear Greater Sudbury council recognizes the need for this project to proceed for the safety of so many residents that travel to and from this very dangerous piece of highway on a daily basis,” the statement reads.
The MP also said the decision paves the way for future highway expansions.
“I have a long-term vision for growth in Greater Sudbury to connect MR 35 with Phase 2 of Maley Drive which would then connect to the Coniston Highway Bypass, opening a safe and timely route to the future True North Strong Centre,” Serré said. “This is an endeavour that will rely on the support of all levels of government, however, if this vision holds the potential to further open the gates to Greater Sudbury as ‘Destination North’ then why not think big!”
