Report calls for committee to study best location for new arena:

A new arena will likely cost at least $80 million and run an annual operating deficit of $825,000, says a consultant's report prepared to give city council a better idea of what a new events centre would involve. By comparison, the current Sudbury Arena on Elgin Street ran a deficit of about $700,000 last year. The report by Ron Bidulka of PricewaterhouseCoopers says the cost of a new facility could rise to $100 million if the city has to buy land, build parking or faces environmental concerns. Research into Indigenous dementia gets $1M boost:

Researchers at Health Sciences North Research Institute and Laurentian University are rolling up their lab coat sleeves to tackle dementia among Indigenous peoples. The Canadian Institute of Health Research is funding two projects — each receiving $500,000 — that will bring new and culturally-adapted approaches to address the needs of Indigenous people living with or at risk of developing dementia. Rates of dementia among Indigenous people are reported to be 34 per cent higher than the non-Indigenous population and rising more quickly, according to research from HSNRI. Summer Games bid committee impressed by Sudbury:

Greater Sudbury was the first stop for the 2021 Canada Games bid evaluation committee, and the head of the committee said the city has acquited itself well as it tries to win the event. Carew spoke to reporters at an event at Laurentian University on Feb. 27 and said that from what he had seen, Sudbury had a very enthusiastic and excited bid committee that showed them a great day in the Nickel City. In addition to Sudbury; Ottawa, Niagara, and the combined bid of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph are also in the running. It would be held July 26 - Aug. 15, 2021, and include 23 sports split in two one-week segments. Find more on this story here.

Fire optimization plan gets rough reception in Lively:

They were turning people away at the door Monday night in Lively, as crowds gathered to hear the details of a controversial fire optimization plan. And there was plenty of hostility directed toward city staff about the plan, which would close some stations, reduce the number of volunteer firefighters and increase the city's complement of career firefighters. New Sudbury Centre to unveil new food court today:

The New Sudbury Centre will be holding the grand opening of The Canteen on Feb. 28 at 10:30 a.m. The community is invited to check out the $1.8 million renovation that is the first of its kind since 1984.  The new food court boasts 88 additional seats and two new kiosks (Booster Juice & Kernels Popcorn). According to mall manager Genny Beckerton the Canteen feels less like a cafeteria and more like a courtyard. In 2013, HOOPP Realty Inc. purchased the New Sudbury Centre and has been working to improve the shopping experience. Sturgeon's rival chip stands both set to open March 2:

RIV Chip Stand in Sturgeon Falls announced on their Facebook page that they will be opening for the season on March 2. Larry's Chip Stand, which is located across the road from RIV on Main Street, is also preparing to open on March 2. Back in June of 2016, RIV was named one of the best places to get poutine in Canada by BuzzFeed.
