True North Strong team holding press conference today:

True North Strong, which is proposing to build a sports and entertainment complex on The Kingsway, has called a press conference on the afternoon of June 22 at Le Fromagerie Elgin where it plans to "complete the proposed vision for True North Strong as a part of a vibrant and growing City of Greater Sudbury." Place des Arts could be adding to the $5M it got from city:

Place des Arts is holding a press conference on the venue's future site on Larch Street in downtown Sudbury at 11 a.m. Thursday, where it's expected provincial funding for the project will be announced. The event will be attended by Sudbury MPP and Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault. A logo for the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation was included in the media advisory. Last year, the City of Greater Sudbury approved $5 million for the downtown shared arts facility for local francophone organizations. It's hoped the city funds will leverage provincial and federal grants for enough to build the $30 million facility. Check back with Sudbury.com later today for more on this story.

Gateway Casinos hosts customer celebration day:

All three Gateway Casino locations in Northern Ontario will host a daylong celebration for customers, which will include new and exciting promotions and prizes, live entertainment, Gateway merchandise giveaways and delicious food and drink specials. The Sudbury event starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 11 p.m. with live entertainment provided by Junior Williams starting at 8 p.m. Gateway Casino Sudbury is located in Chelmsford at 400 Bonin Rd. Anonymous donor contributes $25k to NCF:

The Northern Cancer Foundation (NCF) received a generous donation of $25,000 from Lily Fielding on June 21. This donation comes after Fielding announced that she would match donations which were made to the Cancer Centre Walk/Run/Bike for Hope for the week following the event which was held on June 11. The NCF was taken by surprise when an anonymous donor came forward with plans to match Fielding’s contributions.  As such, a second $25,000 donation has been made to the Cancer Centre Walk/Run/Bike for Hope.  The NCF and Kivi Park has announced that the total amount raised for the third annual Cancer Centre Walk/Run/Bike for Hope is more than $105,000. 

Hanmer resident wins $75,000 on scratch ticket:

Jacqueline Pelletier of Hanmer is celebrating after winning a $75,000 top prize with INSTANT NEON 3X MULTIPLIER.  “I love to play instant tickets,” said Jacqueline while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up her winnings. “My favourite is INSTANT CROSSWORD and now INSTANT NEON 3X MULTIPLIER!”  Jacqueline purchased her ticket while out on her usual walk with her dog. Find the full story here.

Moonlight Beach earns Blue Flag Award:

On June 21, first day of summer, an official flag-raising event took place on Moonlight Beach to celebrate its Blue Flag designation, the second beach in Greater Sudbury to earn the title. The Blue Flag is a respected and recognized international eco-label for beaches, which is awarded based on 33 strict criteria in water quality, environmental education and management, and safety and services.
