Cops on the water to ensure safe boating this weekend:

On Saturday, July 22, Larry Berrio in partnership with Tourism Ontario will be hosting the second annual Berrio on the Sandbanks Lake Wahnapitae Provincial Park. Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources Park Wardens will be on site and patrolling the water in boats to ensure the safety of all those in attendance.  Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Emergency Medical Services will also be on hand and patrolling the water as a precaution. Officers will be at the boat launches to educate community members on safe boating practices and to make sure that all boats are equipped with the proper safety equipment.

Aquatic centre upgrades at YMCA will keep it afloat for years to come:

Upgrades to the YMCA's aquatic centre to the tune of $176,000 wouldn't have been possible without a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, said the general manager of Health, Fitness and Aquatics. Kendra MacIsaac said the four-week project is now complete. A ceremony was held on July 21 to officially reopen the aquatic centre. A grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in the amount of $88,000 helped pay for those upgrades, which included a new liner for the pool, new tiles, a new sub floor and upgrades to the filtration system, among other things. Charity golf tourney for NOFCC goes today:

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4705 which represents inside and outside city employees, Greater Sudbury Housing, hydro and much more will tee it uo for Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC) today. This is the fourth year that union members have held this tournament and they will be teeing off at 10 a.m. at Forest Ridge Golf Course. Participants have already raised more than $3,000 this year.

Thunder Bay's mayor charged with extortion:

Thunder Bay mayor Keith Hobbs and his wife Marisa have each been charged with extortion and obstructing justice. The charges against the 65-year-old mayor and his 53-year-old wife were announced in a Friday morning news release by the OPP, with the provincial police statement that the charges stem from "an investigation of allegations of criminal wrongdoing that include a municipal official and a local resident." Mountain bike tour hits the trails in Walden:

Cycling enthusiasts and fitness fanatics alike will take to the trails of the Walden Mountain Bike Club on Sunday, July 23. The Walden mountain bike tour is one of the final legs in the Sudbury Fitness Challenge, ahead of the Beaton Classic on Aug. 23. 

Weekend weather:

The hot weather will continue into the start of the weekend with a mix of sun and cloud on tap for Saturday and a high of 24. Increasing cloudiness expected Saturday evening with the low dropping to 15. It won't get much warmer on Sunday as the forecast calls for cloudy skies and a high of just 16.
