Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Greater Sudbury and the surrounding area in response to favourable conditions for thunderstorms that may be accompanied by strong wind gusts and large hail.
This alert is to remain in effect for the remainder of the afternoon and into the early evening, during which time Environment Canada says there is potential for wind gusts up to 90 km/h and nickel-sized hail.
"Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees, and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.
Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors," said Environment Canada in the weather statement.
"The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches."
