It's Indigenous Education Week at St. Charles College, and what better way to highlight it than with its very first powwow.

Hundreds of students from Sudbury Catholic District School Board joined in the celebration.

Amy Shawanda, Indigenous support worker at St. Charles, said she was able to secure a $2,500 Speak Up grant through the Ministry of Education to put on the powwow.

“There has never been a powwow here before,” Shawanda said. “I thought this would be the perfect day for the powwow and to wrap up Indigenous Education Week.”

On Tuesday, students learned about about traditional foods. On Wednesday, students participated in a sweatlodge ceremony.

“We are trying to make (this week) more interactive for the students to get them more engaged, and to let them know what kind of services are available,” Shawanda said.
