Six forest fires are burning in the Northeast, the latest of which was found Saturday south of Kabinakagami Lake, according to the latest fire situation update by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFE).

The forest fire hazard ranges from low to high in most of the region, aside from an isolated area near the Mattagami River which is showing an extreme hazard.

Wawa 9 was found Saturday and is not yet under control at 0.1 of a hectare.

Chapleau 10 is under control at 0.3 of a hectare and is located on a small island of Kashbogama Lake.

Timmins 15 is under control at 0.6 of a hectare and is located southwest of Pebonishewi Lake.

Timmins 17 is being held at 0.1 of a hectare and is located half a kilometre north of Fortune Road, on the west side of the Nat River.

Sudbury 36 is being held at 0.1 of a hectare and is located around 2 km north of Camp Seven Lake.

Cochrane 10 is still being observed at 74 hectares and is located around 100 km southeast of Moose Factory.

AFE asks that residents do their part in preventing forest fires by adopting safe campfire practices. Choose the site of your campfire carefully, keep your fire small and never leave a flame unattended. To extinguish your fire, drown it with water, stir the ash to uncover any hot coals, and drown it again.

Take prevention one step further by considering alternatives to burning brush or yard waste, such as chipping, composting or saving burn piles for after the fire season. Use of outdoor fires must follow the outdoor burning rules set out in the Forest Fire Prevention Act of Ontario, which can be found here
