City unveils new emergency notification system

The City of Greater Sudbury will be unveiling Sudbury Alerts, the city's new emergency notification system, this morning at Tom Davies Square. Sudbury.com will be on hand for the announcement and demonstration of the new system, which automatically sends emergency text messages and emails to those who subscribe.

McCulloch Hospice kicks off Stand By Me campaign tomorrow

Maison McCulloch Hospice and the Sudbury Hospice Foundation will launch their Stand By Me capital campaign tomorrow morning with Sudbury’s biggest hug around the hospice. Sudbury.com will be on the scene to bring you live video coverage beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Finnish ambassador honouring Huntington president with award today

Dr. Kevin McCormick, president and vice-chancellor of Huntington University, will be recognized by the government of Finland with a very prestigious national award. A private investiture ceremony, hosted by Vesa Lehtonen, ambassador of Finland to Canada, is scheduled to be held today.

Easter Seals Dancing with the Stars this Friday

The 7th annual Dancing with Easter Seals Stars takes place this Friday, Feb. 24. This year’s diverse lineup of ‘Stars’ includes entrepreneurs, business professionals, a student, a science guy and a TV show contestant, to name a few. The event raises money for children with physical disabilities, helping to provide mobility equipment and communication devices, such as walkers, wheelchairs, porch lifts and ramps to families who require additional help and support in raising a child with a physical disability.

The Sudbury Wolves and Vale team up once again for the annual Sudbury Saturday Night game this Saturday, Feb. 25, at Sudbury Arena. The Pack goes head to head with the Mississauga Steelheads that night. Meanwhile, the evening will feature a community investment partnership with Science North and a performance by the Shaft Bottom boys performing Stompin' Tom Connors tunes and some of their own Sudbury Saturday Night classics. Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser this Saturday

The fifth annual Coldest Night of the Year walk benefiting the work of the Samaritan Centre takes place this Saturday, Feb. 25, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Rainbow Centre. The goal of this fundraiser is to raise much needed funds for the Samaritan Centre and to raise awareness regarding the issue of homelessness and poverty in Sudbury. The Samaritan Centre is a multi-agency facility in Sudbury made up of the Elgin St. Mission, Blue Door Soup Kitchen and Corner Clinic. It serves 300-400 persons daily with feeding programs, clothing depot, shower facilities, housing referrals and medical appointments. It also is a warming centre in the winter months when the temperature dips below -15.
