Snolab emerges with interactive demos at the farmers market

What’s better than just shopping, learning something while shopping.

Cooking is a kind of science. You need the right ingredients, spices, some salt and you are ready to charm guests.

A common place for Sudburians to pick out fresh ingredients is Sudbury Farmers Market.

However today shoppers also got a chance to learn about science first hand, through Snolab.

Along with the usual hustle and bustle of local vendors and the residents at the Market, Snolab was hyping the scene with some light-themed demonstrations.

“We wanted to come out and tell people about Snolab, and the kind of experiments that we are doing that might benefit the community,” Samantha Kuula, Snolab’s communication officer said.

Children and adults alike got front-row opportunity to see what happens when the light is passed through various surfaces and understand the science behind it.

“Interacting with the community and doing education outreach not only helps kids grow interested in science, but we also see educators, and they are able to bring these experiments to their classroom,” Kuula said.

Snolab will be present at the market again in September and October with new themes spreading the seeds of science.

“We work underground, our lab is located two kilometres deep underground, and then it is another two kilometres walk, so it is possible that sometimes people can forget about all the exciting experiments we are conducting,” Kuula said. “Bringing the experiments to the market helps us educate people about our programs while having fun.”

Apart from education outreach Snolab’s mission is to inform the community about the positive economic aspects of the underground lab.

“We are bringing in scientists from around the world to conduct experiments at our facility. This helps draw funding, and also increases job opportunities for local community,” Kuula said.
