Byelection bribery trial Day 9

Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault will be back on the stand Wednesday morning to complete his testimony at the Sudbury byelection bribery trial, after objections to the line of questioning by the Crown delayed proceedings Tuesday.
At issue is the content of the “commitments” Thibeault received from the Liberals before he decided to switch parties and legislatures in 2014.
The commitments were a professional and fully resourced byelection campaign, income replacement for himself and paid campaign jobs for two of his staffers, Brian Band and Darrell Marsh. That's how he characterized the commitments in an interview with Elections Ontario.

Laurentian faculty give union solid strike mandate

The Laurentian University Faculty Association (LUFA) got the strike mandate it was looking for from its members.
LUFA's previous contract expired on June 30. The union will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 28.
Members voted 91 per cent in favour of strike action in the event a new collective agreement cannot be reached with Laurentian's board of governors.

'Baloney': Beaver Lake residents give fire chief tongue-lashing on volunteer recruitment

Some disgruntled Beaver Lake residents who say they were rejected as potential volunteer firefighters gave Greater Sudbury Fire Chief Trevor Bain a tongue-lashing at a Sept. 18 public meeting.
The staffing situation is dire at the Beaver Lake fire station, where there's only three volunteer firefighters servicing about 250 far-flung homes in the rural area of Walden, on the outskirts of the City of Greater Sudbury.

Cinéfest: Film shot in Sudbury shines a light on residential schools

The story of Canada's Indian residential schools is an important one that needs to be told, said Stephen Campanelli, director of the film “Indian Horse,” which screens Sept. 22 at Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival.
That's why when he heard a director was needed for the film — an adaptation of the late Richard Wagamese's 2012 book of the same name — Campanelli, who's best known as Clint Eastwood's long-time cameraman, jumped at the chance.

Farewell Apollo: Police bid farewell to one of its finest service dogs

Greater Sudbury Police Service bid farewell this week to one of its own. It wasn’t a human officer who passed away, though. The service said goodbye to Apollo, an eight-year veteran of the GSPS canine unit.
