Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Take Back the Night is tonight

The city's annual Take Back the Night March is set for Sept. 21.
More than 200 people are expected to gather at the Shkagamik-kwe Community Centre (105 Elm Street) and then march through the downtown core.
The march will be led by women and survivors, and has also called for all those who have hand drums to lead the march.
The event starts at 6 p.m. with food and drinks, a rally at 6:30 p.m., with the march starting at 7 p.m. Organizers say all who share the "core values" of this event are welcome to attend.

Byelection bribery trial Day 10: Defence to ask judge to dismiss charges

The Sudbury bribery trial is on a break until Oct. 10, when defence lawyers will bring in a motion to dismiss the case.
The 10th day of the trial wrapped up quickly Wednesday morning in the Ontario Court of Justice, when Judge Howard Borenstein ruled against the Crown's attempts to ask certain questions of Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault.
At issue were the nature of the “commitments” the Ontario Liberals made to Thibeault to convince him to leave the federal NDP in 2014 to run for the provincial Liberals in the Sudbury byelection.
While including such things as having signs and pamphlets printed in Sudbury, the three key commitments were a fully resourced and professional byelection campaign, income replacement for Thibeault, and paid campaign jobs for two of his staff.
The dispute arose over court procedure. Normally, the Crown cross-examines its witness, then the defence gets a chance to ask questions. The Crown is allowed to re-examine the witness at that point about any new testimony, but the defence isn't allowed to ask questions a second time.

As review continues, police change how officers handle sexual assault cases

Although there is still work to be done, Greater Sudbury Police Service said this morning it has already made changes to the way its officers manage sexual assault cases.
A Wednesday press conference at N'Swakamok Native Friendship Centre provided media with an update on an internal review of how GSPS handles such cases. That review, which is still in process, was spurred by an investigative report from The Globe & Mail that broke last winter.
The “Unfounded” investigative series by reporter Robyn Doolittle found police services across the country dismissed a higher than expected rate of sexual assault as baseless or, as the title of the series suggests, unfounded.
As part of that investigation, Greater Sudbury was found to have dismissed more cases — at 33 per cent, nearly twice the national rate of 19.39 per cent — than the Canadian average.
When the story broke back in February, Police Chief Paul Pedersen vowed the service would conduct a review of all 400 cases that were dismissed.
