Good morning, Greater Sudbury.

Here are some stories to start your day.

Passenger numbers at Sudbury Airport skyrocket in 2017:

The Greater Sudbury Airport posted an overall 18 per cent increase in the number of travellers visiting the airport in 2017, with almost 271,000 arriving and/or departing, compared to just over 229,000 in 2016. The number of travellers for the first eight months of 2017 was up by more than 16 per cent. As of August 2017, just over 174,000 travellers had come through the airport, compared to almost 150,000 in 2016. The significant increase is due to a combination of factors, according to Greater Sudbury Airport CEO Todd Tripp. “This substantial growth can be attributed to the air carriers meeting passenger demand through improved scheduling, a stronger focus on flight reliability, and the upsizing of aircraft for certain flights," said Tripp. "Additionally, the introduction of WestJet to the Sudbury market has been extremely beneficial. We want to extend our gratitude to Air Canada, Porter Airlines, Bearskin Airlines, WestJet, and Sunwing for their exceptional service over the past year”

Laurentian University said it's came a long way in the time period from 2012 to 2017, the years covered by its last strategic plan. Not least among these accomplishments are multimillion dollar contributions from private investors and the facelift Laurentian received through its campus modernization project. It also climbed in the Maclean's Magazine university rankings, has the highest post-graduate employment rate in Ontario and has more indigenous faculty members than any other university in the province. On Jan. 17, Laurentian released its strategic plan for the next five years, from 2018 through to the year 2023. Under the banner of Imagine 2023, the new strategic plan was developed in consultation with more than 1,500 students, faculty, staff, alumni and other stakeholders. Full story can be found here.

Team Fleury turns season around with NOCA crown:

It's only been three years since the Tracy Fleury rink made their last appearance at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian Women's Curling Championship. It just feels like much longer ago. The rink out of Idylwylde Golf & Curling Club made up of Fleury (skip), along with Crystal Webster (vice), Jennifer Wylie (second), Amanda Gates (lead) and Jenna Enge (fifth) pulled a 6-4 win out of the fire opposite the Thunder Bay quartet of Krista McCarville, Sudburian Kendra Lilly (vice), Ashley Sippala (second) and Sarah Potts (lead) Saturday night in Sudbury, claiming the NOCA banner for the second time in the process. New chapter for Parker House Suites:

It's one of the oldest buildings in Sudbury and in its heyday was among many in a neighbourhood built for the city's elite. For years, Parker House Suites has been a temporary home for business travellers, as well as judges and lawyers who are just metres away from the city courthouse. As of last October, Ken Birtch and his wife, Lorena Dudley, are the new owners of the historical 1920s-era building on Elm Street, near the downtown. Birtch and his wife purchased the building as a kind of retirement plan after a decades-long career with the Greater Sudbury Police Service. The couple has 13 years of experience together running bed and breakfasts, so this is a natural transition for both. They are still running and taking reservations while they make small changes to the suites, including replacing some of the in-room electronics and the keys with coded keypads. Parker House Suites boasts three suites, and each has its own ambiance and unique features. All of them include a fully stocked kitchenette, a large bathroom, Wi-Fi and a large flat-screen TV.
