More than 50 workers and recent retirees with the Sudbury Tax Services Office are among the 80,000 federal employees who have faced problems with their compensation since the new Phoenix payroll system was implemented in April.

A Canada Revenue Agency employee who asked to remain anonymous told Sudbury.com some employees received their first pay cheque in four months on July 27, but have still not received compensation owed from previous pay cycles going back to April, when the federal government started to use the Phoenix payroll system.

Employees who retired in the spring have also not received their pensions and severance packages, where applicable.

Some other workers at the taxation centre haven't received the full pay to which they're entitled, the source said.

The previous Harper Conservative government initiated the Phoenix payroll system, but it has been rolled out in phases under the Trudeau Liberals.

Marie Lemay, deputy minister for Public Services and Procurement, told national media the government received 720 complaints initially from federal employees who had not been paid since the new system was implemented.

The federal government later confirmed more than 80,000 employees have had issues with the system. Some have not received any pay since it was implemented, while others have not gotten overtime pay or any supplementary pay for which they were entitled.

Lemay told reporters on July 28 Public Works and Government Services Canada are aiming to resolve all issues for those affected by the new system by the end of October.

People who have not been paid at all since April remain the government's first priority, Lemay said. Most can expect to be paid by Aug. 10, she said, if they haven't received compensation already.
