After less than three years in the role, Sophie Bouffard has announced she is stepping down as the University of Sudbury's president and vice-chancellor as of July 31.

She becomes the new president of Université de Saint-Boniface in Manitoba in August. Université de Saint-Boniface is affiliated with the University of Manitoba.

Bouffard became the president of the University of Sudbury — a federated university on Laurentian University's campus — in the fall of 2016.

“The University of Sudbury Board of Regents and community would like to thank Dr. Bouffard for her leadership and dedication during her years of service within the institution, and wish her much success in these new professional endeavours,” said a press release.

A transition plan will be put in place, and the search for the University of Sudbury's next president “will begin and soon as possible,” the press release said.

There's been a lot of turnover recently among Greater Sudbury's post-secondary leaders.

Robert Haché becomes Laurentian University's 11th president on July 1. Pierre Zundel has been the interim president of Laurentian since 2017, when Dominic Giroux, now the president of Health Sciences North, left the role.

Northern Ontario School of Medicine founding dean Dr. Roger Strasser steps down from his role with the medical school at the end of June. Dr. Sarita Verma has been appointed NOSM's new dean, effective July 1.

The Rev. Canon John Gibeaut becomes the next president of Thorneloe University this weekend, on June 1. The federated university's former president, Robert Derrenbacker, was appointed to a new position at Trinity College in Melbourne, Australia in May 2018.
