Sophie's first haircut raises $2,281 for NEO Kids

Her locks will be donated to Wigs for Kids

Sophie Hoag just turned five years old on June 21, but the École publique Foyer-Jeunesse kindergarten student already knows what it's like to be a standup citizen

On June 23, the youngster had her first haircut ever, but it wasn't just any normal haircut. Sophie is donating the locks to Wigs for Kids, to be made into wigs for children who lose their hair while going through chemotherapy.

“We were watching TV together, and a commercial came on about Sick Kids Hospital,” said Sophie's mom, Stephanie Moyle. “There were two little girls in the commercial who were hooked up to machines, and they had no hair. Sophie asked me why they had no hair, so I explained they were going through chemotherapy because they are very sick, and that the medication they were on made them lose all their hair.

“I mentioned to her that there are people who cut their hair and donate it to make wigs for people going through chemotherapy, and she was very interested. We watched some videos from Wigs for Kids  on Youtube, and she said she wanted to cut her hair for the little girls she had seen on TV.”

Taking it a step further, Sophie said she also wanted to raise money for the NEO Kids Foundation. She set a target of $500. In the end, she blew that number out of the water, bringing in a whopping $2,281.

“We're super proud parents of this little girl,” said Moyle. “She has such a big heart, she's always putting others first, and I'm just honoured that she is growing up to be so thoughtful towards others.

“We would like to thank everyone at Sophie's school for making this go above and beyond anything I thought it could be.”

Sophie had her hair cut in front of her classmates, where they cheque was presented to the NEO Kids Foundation.

“It's amazing to hear that a five-year-old girl wants to make a difference in her community,” said Shanna Crispo, events co-ordinator, NEO Kids Foundation.
