SUV lost control and struck gas main on corner

The driver of an SUV that slid into a gas main at the corner of Southview Drive and Martindale Road in the wee hours of Christmas Eve may be charged with careless driving, according to Greater Sudbury Police.

The truck ruptured the gas main, sending dangerously explosive and noxious fumes into the air.

Several neighbourhood residents were evacuated and Union Gas cut the feed to about 100 homes as repairs to the pipe were made. Some residents said they were awakened at 1:30 am, shortly after the accident, told to dress warmly and avoid turning on any lights on the way out.

A light could have caused a spark, which would have ignited any gas present.

Other residents, who were still awake at the time, said they heard a bang and the loud hiss of gas soon after.

The owner of the home that sits right behind the gas main said she complained when the city installed the gas main on her lawn.
She said she has lost count of the number of times she ahs gazed out her front window to see another vehicle lose control and slide into her front lawn.
