Thanks to some federal government funding assistance, the Sudbury Theatre Centre (STC) will be able to hire a student to market the professional theatre company and upgrade equipment.

Sudbury MP Diane Marleau and Nickel Belt MP Ray Bonin made the funding announcement late last week.

The STC will receive $144,000 to assist with the purchase of equipment related to the theatre company's current revitalization project and another $27,500, supported by FedNor's Youth Internship Program, will be used to hire a youth intern to assist with marketing, planning and development activities.

?The Government of Canada is dedicated to helping Northern organizations and communities address local business, economic and social priorities,? said Marleau, in a news release. ?This initiative will greatly benefit the area by strengthening Sudbury's vital tourism and culture sectors.?

The STC has been providing world-class theatrical productions for over 30 years and the presence of such a respected organization greatly impacts tourism, economic and business development and the quality of life of all residents, said Bonin.

The youth internship program is designed to provide hands-on work experience to recent graduates, allowing them to gain experience and skills to secure permanent employment in Northern Ontario. Since its inception in 1997, FedNor has provided over $20 million in funding to help almost 800 young people across Northern Ontario, in both the public and private sectors, make the transfer from campus to the workplace.
