Steps for Life - Walking for Families of Workplace Tragedy, an annual event for awareness of workplace safety, is happening in Sudbury in the first week of May.

The organizers for the event are inviting friends and supporters to get involved, get registered and spread the word.

Participants can pre-register online at the Steps for Life Sudbury website, and already several local teams have signed up.

The event itself is happening on May 7 with sign-up at Workplace Safety North, at 235 Cedar St., close to downtown Sudbury.

Organizers said Steps for Life is a five-kilometre fundraising walk to help support families affected by life-altering workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths. "It’s a unique way to educate your community about the devastating ripple effects of a workplace tragedy and how we can work together to prevent others from being injured or killed on the job," said the Sudbury website

Also, the organizers this year are planning to host an in-person Steps for Life walk in Sudbury.  Each in-person Steps for Life event will follow all applicable public health requirements or guidelines including gathering size, mask use, physical distancing, and other health and safety practices. Events with indoor components may require proof of vaccination to enter, depending on the requirements set by the venue, said the organizers.

The fundraising aspect of the event means that money raised can be applied in several ways:

  • Train family members to become injury prevention champions in the national Speakers Bureau.
  • Send family members to a regional Family Forum to help them learn healthy coping skills.
  • Allow family members to receive peer support from a Volunteer Family Guide.
