Stowaway kittens up for adoption at Whiskers Kitty-Cat Shop

Adoption centre just moved from Lorne Street to a larger unit on Edna Street

Two small kittens didn't lose their mittens, but they did lose their mother. The kitties were found in an excavator that had travelled in a flatbed transport truck from Toronto to Sudbury earlier this spring are now ready for adoption through Whiskers Kitty-Cat Shop.

Because they were separated from their mother, the kittens were nursed by a surrogate mama who had just weaned her kittens.

The two grey tabbies — a male and a female — are now about 10 weeks old, and have been named Dusty and Silver by volunteers at SAINTS (Safeguarding Animals In Need in Today's Society), which runs the Whiskers shop.

Volunteer Donalda MacLeod said ideally, they'd like to adopt out Dusty and Silver together to the same home. “They do seem extra bonded,” MacLeod said, adding that they usually seek each other out at naptime.

The two stowaway kittens are among 19 kittens and 13 adult cats up for adoption at the Whiskers currently. That doesn't include the animals in foster care through SAINTS.

Adoption fees are $250 for kittens (that includes the spay or neuter, its first vaccines, defleaing and deworming) and $150 for adult cats (they're all spayed, vaccinated, deflead and dewormed by the rescue).

The adoption centre recently moved from its former location on Lorne Street to a bigger unit at 581 Edna St., next to Castle Plumbing and Heating. The location is still under renovation.

MacLeod said because there are several rooms, it's possible to keep the adult cats and kittens separated now, meaning that they no longer have to keep the kittens in cages.

“When we were on Lorne Street, we were so visible,” she said. “We used to get lots of people coming in, but it's been very quiet right here, so hopefully more people will realize where we are.”

If you'd like to check out the animals up for adoption at Whiskers Kitty-Cat Shop, the adoption centre is open Tuesday to Friday from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m. It's closed on Mondays. Visit saintscats.com.
