The Northern Health Career Awareness Conference will be held this Friday and Saturday at Laurentian University to encourage students to pursue health careers in Northern Ontario.

The conference, which takes place in the Alphonse Raymond building, will feature more than 30 presentations. The presentations, in both French and English, include information on health-care careers such as speech language pathologist, radiation therapist, audiologist and dietician.

Its target audience is students in Grade 7 to 12, teachers and parents.

Dr. Darlene Kitty, the first Cree from eastern James Bay to become a medical doctor, will give the keynote address Friday morning shortly after 9 am.
Conference co-ordinator Tina Oliveira says, ?Professions in health care go much further than just being a doctor or a nurse. There are more than 23 regulated health-care professions. We want to expand students? minds and create awareness about these professions.?

?All of our program speakers are from the north,? says Dale Mazzuchin, education resources consultant.

?The speakers will help outline some of the good and bad aspects of their careers and will also discuss their personal schooling experience.?

Information booths will line the hallways of the Alphonse Raymond building, providing material on health programs offered at Laurentian, as well as at
College Boreal and Cambrian College.

The Northern Health Career Awareness Conference is sponsored by NOMEC, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, and the Government of Canada?s Job Creation Partnership,

Currently, Friday?s presentations are fully registered, but there is still room in Saturday?s sessions. For more information, contact Oliveira at 688-0378, ext. 2250.
