Students help plant 1,000 unique tulips to commemorate Canada's 150th birthday

Red and white tulips will bloom throughout the city in the spring

Students from St. David Catholic Elementary School were busy getting their hands dirty at Pine Street Community Garden on Oct. 19.

Tulips were planted at the Pine Street garden, as well as at Landsdowne Public School.

The children, along with members from the Donovan Elm West Community Action Network (DEWCAN), spent the day planting 1,000 unique "Canadian tulip" bulbs to commemorate Canada's upcoming 150th birthday.

The Canadian tulip was created in a partnership between the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the National Capital Commission in Ottawa, Communities in Bloom and Home Hardware. The tulips are white with red flames and resemble the Canadian flag.

"We want to share the pride and joy that we have for this beautiful country that we live in," said organizer Lori Wall.

Sudburians can purchase the Canada 150 tulips at any Home Hardware location.

"We hope to see the city covered in white and red tulips when they bloom in the spring."
